Finding exhaustive (exhausting?) coverage of the media’s top stories du jour is a snap. Finding articles that are interesting and important to you, however, can take hours.

The good news is that publishers and software developers are teaming up to deliver timely articles of your choosing to your virtual doorstep — and you don’t even have to tip the delivery boy. Newsreaders (no, not Peter Jennings) can avoid the sordid and salacious headlines (unless that’s what you’re into) and maximize your news trawl time.

Portal websites such as Google and Yahoo provide a basic method to customize a news page based on a topic like sports or politics, using feeds from multiple sources. Yahoo’s page relies solely on wire-service stories (Associated Press and Reuters), while Google includes headlines from thousands of news sources.

The next step up the evolutionary ladder of news aggregation is the web-based newsreader. Instead of visiting all of your favorite websites individually, you can scroll the aggregated headlines using a web-based newsreader such as NewsGator, Feedster or Bloglines.

There are a number more out there than the ones that are listed. I use the Sage plug-in for Firefox…for a while I was using AmphetaDesk, but I made the switch when I quit using Internet Explorer.
