Why don’t cops have to obey traffic laws?

I was walking to the Murky Coffee when I saw a cop car stopped at a light just off of 8th Street SE. The car was inching toward the right, obviously readying to make a right on red. The only thing is, there is a sign posted right at that corner indicating no right on red. The car turned. Now, if I were to do this and there happened to be a cop close by, I would guess that I would be receving a ticket. This isn’t the first time here in DC that I’ve seen this sort of behavior in a non-emergency situation. I’ve seen cops speeding down streets with no lights on, driving well above the speed limit. I’ve seen cops zipping through red lights with their sirens blaring, only to turn them off after they get through the light. Is this acceptable behavior? Is this even legal? Do different rules apply to police offers than to the general populace? This sort of stuff really sucks. I’d like to see different behavior from our men and women in blue.
