Should you “Rent My DVR”?

A few months ago, I performed an experiment. I hooked my TiVo up to my Macintosh and invited any and all to come on over—at least virtually—and watch my TiVo over iChat. It was a great experience. I met a good number of people I hadn’t known before. I got to watch TV “collaboratively”. (Very Web 2.0!) And I pushed the limits of the DMCA but just a little bit.

Now along comes “Rent my DVR”. For about a quarter, you pay someone to record a show for you to watch. Based out of Sweden, it’s run by Micke Langberg. I’m guessing it will take a gang of lawyers to sort out the tricky legal aspects of whether or not this constitutes illegal fire sharing, a front for BitTorrent or a clever new way to stay within the law but expand your viewing horizons.

Have you tried “Rent My DVR?” Let us know how well it worked. And if any of you Lifehacker readers are copyright lawyers, I’d love to hear your opinions about this, about p2p and about fair use and TV.
