Travelocity’s flight insurance is a scam

I purchased flight insurance from Travelocity for the trip I was planning to return to Guyana. I was flying BWIA and they are notorious for delays, mechanical failures, lost luggage and so on and so forth. Between myself and all the other volunteers that have flown with BWIA while we were in Guyana for Peace Corps, we have enough horror stories to fill a book. I thought these experiences warranted the insurance.

Well, sure enough, my flight down to Guyana on BWIA was delayed, over and over. A total of 5 times for a number of hours. At least 6 hours.

Then on my way back, the flight was delayed again. For many hours. BWIA is notorious for bad service, but I didn’t know that Travelocity was as well.

So I reviewed the flight insurance deal on the Travelocity site to make sure that delays and other inconveniences were covered. They were. I wrote them explaining my situation and they replied that since it was the fault of the carrier and not their own, they would not honor the insurance.

WHAT?

What is the point of the insurance? My plane was delayed for yours, I was stuck in various airports longer than expected, meals were missed, my girlfriend had to wait to pick me up…I knew all this stuff was coming so I bought the insurance. Pretty lame if you ask me…Travelocity should be ashamed of themselves.

I’ll continue to use them but I guess it’s pointless to recommend insurance if you know you are going to have problems. Lame.

  1. That’s just ridiculous. What are the insuring against? Temptation to ever again by a ticket from Travelocity?

  2. Buy. Buy a ticket.

  3. Dear Brokekid:

I have a problem with the “insurance broker” used by travelocity. My problem seems simple enough. I sent a letter to the insurance company that denied my request and would be happy to send copies of the correspondence to anyone interested in joining the exchange.

The essence of not making the trip was that my son was accused of DUI, had to be in court during the flight time. I had to attend as a witness although I wasn’t there. Only arrived after. But that’s another story. One of my issues is that my son hadn’t been convicted so how “was this alcohol related. How was my inablility to travel related to alcohol?

Another issue — is it reasaonable to assume that one can read and understand all the fine print? Is it reasonable that Travelocity basically keeps 50% of the cost of the trip if one can’t make it when if we go through an airline and hotel we would get a full refund?

It is note worthy that on their original letter of denial, there were a total of 6 insurance companies listed on their letter and one included at the company registered to work in our state. No interlocking conflicts there. Wonder which one I could sue?

Anyhow I intend to go through their appeal process as well as sending all correspondence to travelocity and appealing to them. Also I intend to send these actions to the Delaware Attorney General, my Federal and State Representatives and the FAA.

Any comments, suggestions, conmiserations would be appreciated.

    Dan
