Monkey Vs Robot – My Weekly Idealist post
Mapping in developing countries
Google isn’t able to map every country on it’s own but fortunately they’ve created a tool that lets everyone contribute to their mapping efforts.
Recently they’ve updated their Mapmaker tool, which crowdsources mapping for regions not included on Google Maps, too include 160+ countries.
For example, a nonprofit I work with, is using the tool to map out Guyana. Our hope is that other NGOs, nonprofits and individuals will be able to use these updated maps along with data from sources like the UN, the World Bank and the GeoCommons to better plan projects and initiatives.
FeedaNeed.org
Volunteer opportunities come in all flavors – most recently we’ve added a creative flavor – and we encourage all types to help out, but what about nerds with the desire to do good?
I was searching for a service like this, one that connects geeks and nonprofits but I didn’t need to look very hard before I ran across Reddit’s FeedaNeed.org project.
How does it work?
If you’re a developer, you sign in with your Reddit.com account, indicate how much time your willing to spend on a project, a brief blurb about your skills and occupation and they’ll match you with a nonprofit in need.
If you’re a nonprofit, you indicate who you are and what your need is. Nonprofits are then voted up or down (via Reddit’s vote-to-promote system) and volunteers are matched to the nonprofit by skill/need.
New Social Media feed
I’ve been following about 130 social media related feeds on Google Reader and realized I needed to consolidate them (a la our AllTop nonprofit feed) to cut down on the bloat.
What does this mean?
I’ve consolidated 130+ feeds into one rss feed that only shows very interesting/popular posts related to social media.
And this is good for what?
If you want to learn more about social media and skip to the good stuff, this is for you.
Check out the feed below.
